13 [JUST BEFORE]

Chet Gatia, uber-weatherman for KDTW-TV Detroit was sitting in his office/command-center for the afternoon news segment. They were 15 minutes from the 12-noon news air, and his head was spinning.

“Betel, what the HELL is going on with these tracking models? Is there a software problem? This isn’t a weather map, it’s some crazy toddler art project!”

The lean, attractive, jeans-and-pullover intern flurried over to stand behind him. Intern, but no rookie in newsroom weather; 9 years on-air in Bogota and now a post-graduate doctoral candidate in meteorologic modeling. Chet felt her face take on some odd shape behind him. She reached past him, took the mouse out of his hand, rapid-clicking links… her eyebrows narrowed, a puzzled scowl on her pretty Brazilian face, “que pasó?… que pasó?… que…??” was all she could say over and over, click-click-click…
