28 [Now Now Now]
Dr Thomas continued, “I will finish, so the human race will have a few moments to pray, make spiritual preparation, and say good-bye. My hosts asked me to give you this Last Lecture, to explain, and to convey their regret that the human race didn’t… couldn’t… do better.” Craig shrugged, “I guess we could have. One-hundred-and-nine billion humans have inhabited Earth over our history, and we are now going to join all the other extinct biped humanoid races.”
“I am told that the earth’s genetic patterns of flora and fauna have been secretly collected and sequenced for future reference, in careful quarantine. All the dolphins and whales…” he chuckled… seems that debate just got answered… “well, apparently, they were sentient species among us, and somehow didn’t get infected like us. A few days ago, they’re already relocated to new water worlds. All humankind knowledge, both digital and written, were previously “acquired” and stored… so much for costly on-line security…”
“In this quarantine ship, our planet-life and race will continue in a limited way, to be studied and possibly to develop some sort of future intervention, some advanced vaccine or treatment, with hopes to prevent future races from this destructive, on-going infection. There are 20 humans who are massively infected, and they are to be observed here, on-board. There were 20 other humans chosen by the Guard-keep for further study and discourse by the galactic community, humans who ‘showed progress’. We were invited and came voluntarily. We are being treated well, but will live out our natural lives in a strict quarantine on this research spacecraft.”
Craig looked into the faceless billions in his mind, even though he stood facing a holographic ‘live feed’ image of the Earth and Moon. Despite his own life of enduring human pain, meted out by those selfish and fallen creatures around him, tears were in his eyes.
“I’m sorry. I am SO sorry. In all our collective apocalyptic ideas, it always ended differently. We never realized that our fate was all about who we were, who we are, our character, and how we treated each other. Selfishness is a fatal disease, and we’ve all lived terminally ill unto this death.”
“We never moved significantly from ‘me’ to ‘we’… our race never realized that our long-term survival pinged on ‘we’.
‘Them’ versus ‘us’ really got us in the end.”
His words stopped, and his thoughts echoed through to everyone… endowed by the Guardians, he used this new-found skill of telepathy, much more personal… a direct connect with the eight+ billion humans on his former home-world.
^^This is the end of my lecture, and… well, the end, really^^
^^Good bye, fellow humans^^
^^Fill your last few seconds with grace, mercy, and love^^^^
